Winter whale watching is a whole other experience and adventure compared to our summer tours. Each year continues to surprise us with the wildlife it offers. The winter low lying sun is also something not to be missed, as it casts a warm glow over the white-capped mountains surrounding the bay and to breathe in the winter's fresh yet crisp air is just incredible. Herring and Capelin being the main prey available, attracting Humpback whales, Killer whales/Orcas, White-beaked dolphins and Harbour porpoises to our shores.

The weather and thus sea conditions can be challenging during the winter months, but we adapt by moving our vessels to harbours of more sheltered areas situated around the Reykjanes peninsula and transport our passengers there free of charge from our base in the Old Harbour. Our experience and flexibility allows for a more comfortable and reliable winter whale watching adventure. Going from other harbours means that we may need to take a coach that can be anywhere from 20-60 min., where we can expect the duration of the tour to be around 3-5 hrs. total.

Please note that for your enjoyment, this tour is subject to weather and conditions at sea and therefore it could get cancelled on short notice. In this case we will contact you as soon as possible with the information you provide in the booking process. Stay updated on your tour status or check recent sightings by having a look at our Whale Diary.

Tour area

Our whale watching tours are focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói, just off Reykjavík. Each day we scan the area for signs of whales as we never know for sure where we might find them. Sometimes when weather conditions or chances of spotting whales are greater elsewhere than our regular area in Faxaflói, we depart from nearby harbours like Hafnarfjörður, Keflavík, Sandgerði or Grindavík making the tours last anywhere from 3-5 hrs.

Good to knowWinter adventures at sea will be chilly and therefore we recommend dressing appropriately, by wearing warm clothing and good sturdy shoes. You can also borrow one of our warm blankets and overalls provided on board if needed.

For optimal viewing and a more enjoyable cruise this tour is weather dependent.

We abide by a Code of Conduct for responsible whale watching, thus each encounter is on the animal's terms and distance may be kept to minimise disturbance.

Click here for more information on the cetacean you can expect to see on the tour. If no whales or dolphins make an appearance on your tour we will offer you a complimentary ticket valid for two years.
